Can you only take the CENTER">AOC one time per tax year? In a couple of years, I'll have two kids in college simultaneously. Can I take the CENTER">AOC for each kid?

If you read the publication on the IRS site it explains this. If I remember it is not per kid but a max total for all. I could be mistaken though.

I miss stated earlier on the time frame of current + next 3 years. After rereading the link I posted:

Q11. I'm just beginning college this year. Can I claim the American opportunity tax credit for all four years I pay tuition?

A. The American opportunity tax credit is for amounts paid in 2009 and 2010 only. You may be eligible for the lifetime learning credit for any tuition and fees required for enrollment you pay after 2010.

I saw that, but I saw other places on the IRS site (I think in pub 970) that said you can take this for all 4 years. If not, there's always the Hope credit....if I qualify. Also, I learned (and this makes sense) from pub 970 if your kids receive any scholarship $$$ (which are already tax-free), you have to subtract that from the paid qualifying expenses to determine the amount you can claim for the credit......this reduced my return by about $500. Glad I caught it...

Just filed my 2009 taxes using Taxslayer. Got to be honest I am pleased with the results. For the federal anyway and it was free! My state situation is more complicated than the software is set up to handle so I will be filing that separately. I recommend taxslayer to anyone that might be thinking about it.

Been using H&R Block via Militaryonesource for about 5 years now. Great program in my opinion, plus they have audit support. It is free for Fed and State (or at least OR, I think all states though).

I filed thru taxslayer on 21 Jan and had my return funds deposited on 28 Jan.
