If you use the 1 time cert money near the end of your enlistment, do you have to receive that cert before you separate? It wasn't discussed in other threads, my ed center is useless on the 1 time cert process, and it affects two of my troops.

You have to be done the class by the time you separate...I will be taking a class during terminal leave. The one time cert money only pays for the training, you need to pay for the test yourself. Also you can get more than 1 cert class using this money if the school does it properly, if there is a new horizons near you try them...I am in CISSP and CEH

Also, what is the website that outlines all the rules on the certs? What is/isn't allowed, stuff like that?

Never found much in the way of guidance...I was told that if it is an "industry recognized" cert then it will be approved.
Define self study? They won't pay for the actual test so what are you asking them to pay for?

Also plan it out because the $4500 per year cap still applies...I only got to use $4500 of it.

Before separating, the education center needs to see documentation from the school saying that you passed the course.

I think he would prefer to do some thing like lifeline posted if it's an option. Q wrote: Passed=Attened So he will have to take and pass the cert test prior to separating if I'm tracking right with the test being out of pocket.

I think that would be a tough sell, I don't think they will cover that.
As I said above, the cert has nothing to do with it, they only care about the training to get the cert...all I need to do is show proof of course completion which is automatic if I sign in everyday.

I was able to talk New Horizons into giving me a test voucher for CISSP as well. I told them I wasn't going to commit to the class unless they paid for my test as well and they agreed to. So for 4,500.00 (one-time cert money) I was able to land the boot camp course and test voucher.

Q wrote: The one time cert money only pays for the training, you need to pay for the test yourself. Not necessarily. Your GI bill can cover your Cert test cost. You still have to pay upfront but you can provide the GI Bill people with proof that you took the test and passed and they will reimburse you. Took me a month to get my money back for the cert I took.

True...but you people with kids or planing on having kids should really save your GI Bill for them...unless you are going full time to a high price school you are really wasting it. Here in Texas my GI Bill is worth up to $12,500 per semester plus SSgt BAS for my kids...I am not going to waste that for CERT tests.

Something else people may not know about is that the VA will also reimburse you for failures on exams. I failed my CCNA my first time because I accidently skipped a 6-part question. I was pretty bummed out until I called VA and they said they would reimburse me for it and they did. I got that 250.00 back in a couple of weeks.
