its pretty difficult to use that for a IT cert and get anywhere close to 9K, the program is designed for vocational certs like an H VAC cert, or nursing assistant, things that are offered at vocational schools or maybe community colleges. It can't be used for boot camps or prep courses, I'm not even sure if you can use it to get the test paid for.

It's actually not that hard to use. I am currently working towards my MCSE with Security + at New Horizons. Your TA will pay for all the courses but no tests up to $9,000 with a max of $4,500 a year. You can get reimbursed for the test through your VA - GI Bill if you pass. There are a lot of certification programs out there related to computers. 3C0s look at MCSE and MCSA . 3C2s look at Cisco certs. You can use it on any cert not just one related to your A FSC. The school or institute will know if you qualify to use your TA. This because it has to be an accredited school. The only draw back is it's pulled from the same TA pool. If you used $4,500 for your certs that year you will not be able to attend any "collage classes".
Edit: I forgot to mention my cert is costing exactly 9k. Go price it and you'll see it costs more for a private individual. Close to 13k. For the classes alone.
Hope this helps.

if you use the money for a cert you don't get any TA money for that fiscal year. it's one or the other.

I'm using mine right now. $4,500 gets me A+, Net+, MCSA, MCSE, and a CCNA bootcamp. The class is 4 months long at Stetson University, down here near Tyndall. It makes for long weeks but well worth it, considering it's free!

Yeah it is...We also got free books and study materials, well at least the first 20 to sign up did. Its about $700 worth of books. The teacher is awesome too...Makes the class enjoyable. He also has friends at the Cisco plant over in Destin, FL where he's going to take us on a "field trip". They usually just do the MCSA and MCSE for the $4500, but this semester they decided to throw in the extra stuff to get some more military people signed up. I'm also studying for Security+ on my own. I separate in about a month and I plan on having all of these certs within the next 6 months, with the exception to my CCNA.

Holy sh*t...I thought I got ripped off at 6k for the exact same cert classes, but you my friend got F'd in the A. That was the most wasted 6k I ever spent...

The one-time TA is awesome. I worked with my school and pulled a CCNA, MCSE, MCSE-S and I am about to test out of CISSP. I got all of those thanks to AF TA. Thanks to those certs (and my experience) I was just hired on as a senior network engineer at DISA and I am making 30K more than I was as a TSgt. Take advantage of the free money!

Mine wasn't as good as yours (could only use $4500) but I managed CISSP and CEH...don't let this go to wase if you are getting out!!!
