Hey guys, looks like I'll be headed to Hickam around the end of May, and wanted to find out about life down there. I'm not entirely sure what my job's going to be (I'll be working in DIA apparently, but trying to get any info on my actual job is tough!)
Other than the fact it seems to be really sunny, mild, sandy, and expensive (though coming from Cali, I think it won't be much more of a shock), I don't know much about anything regarding Hawaii =P

I'm a little concerned about housing, I've heard off base tends to be kind of small and older, but I haven't heard anything about the on base housing. I have my hubby and a dog coming with me, so anything with a yard would be great. It sucks they just moved us into a nice home here on Travis with a garage and a fenced back yard, which seems not likely in Hawaii, so we might be moving down the scale =(

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Don't you mean Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam?

Oh just kidding of course, and congrats on your assignment. I tried to get to Hickam myself and I'm quite jealous.

Please note my on base housing info is 3 years old....the on base housing should be (mostly) brand new....but it's also privatized so you give up your BAH for it. It has yards and a covered parking spot. All of the housing (with a small exceptions) has been rebuilt within 5 years. Off base, the houses can be smaller and older, depends on where you look. Most of the places with newer bigger houses are gonna have some massive traffic, though that's just a general rule. Towns like Mililani and Ewa Beach are great but you ride will be about 45 minutes in each day. (they are 15 minutes without traffic).

Hawaii is awesome, I miss it. I didn't work in DIA, but I have a friend who just left there so let me know if you don't get in touch with anyone.

I'm at Hickam and I love it. The weather is always 84/75 except now it's the rainy season so the temp stays in the 70s. Base housing is nice if you can get into the newer homes. They are still tearing down the older ones to build new ones. I suggest staying in the Earhart or Hale Na Koa Villages. Depending on your rank and number of people you can get a sweet pad with a garage and fence that you need.

Traffic sucks in the morning and afternoon. You can get stuck in it for hours. If you live off base you have to leave home early to beat the traffic and stay late to miss the traffic. If there's an accident on the highway you might as well sleep at work. Of course this depends on your work hours. I'm not familiar with DIA.

Let me know if you need some more info, I just got here but learning the ropes.

You will love it, was there from 03-07 and there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss it.

BTW, did you get selected for the Tech spot that was open?

Cool thanks for the info guys! No this isn't for a tech slot, it's for either a SrA or SSgt slot I applied for back in August. I hadn't heard anything, so I figured I didn't get the job. Then just a couple of weeks ago, I was notified that I was the most eligible volunteer! And my RNLTD was April 30! 8O But I did the initial paperwork and they moved it to May 30 lol.
I'm a little nervous about trying to get both cars down there. I know we're authorized one, but hubby isn't gonna wanna pay the $1200 or so it might take to ship the other one. I guess one of us will be riding a bike to work... and if we live on base I bet that'll be me

I work for DIA, hit me up and i will fill you in. Your orders probably say hickam because that is your MPF location, but we actually work on Pearl Harbor.

Wow wow wow... first thing about Hawaii is you gotta learn to hang-loose \ooo/ and chill

You gotta slow down and go with the flow, don't worry so much.
who cares if you only got one car and no house... you'll be in paradise
grab a surfboard and enjoy the beach

Hope you like :spam1:
