I know I asked about Izmir before but since it's getting close to that time thuoght I'd try again. Anyone have any good information on Izmir? What the job is like, good housing areas, furniture places, shopping, restaurants, things to do whatever. I haven't been able to find a lot of detailed information online so anything would be appreciated. Thanks

Izmir - good news, civilian clothes allowance, seaside living, great food and nice people if you try. Turks pride themselves on being hospitable. Bad news - you get the civilian allowance for a reason, you won't work on anything high tech or do anything sexy as a 3C there. You may work the US side or the NATO side - neither would be too difficult.
In my limited experience there (was there TDY for a few days) it's a nice place to visit, not sure I'd want to live or be stationed there. Like many remote assignments, there's a lot of free time at work. Use it wisely; knock out college, tour, and stay above the politics that seem to permeate tours where there's little real work to keep everybody busy enough to mind their own business.
Just opinion - no ill will meant towards those making the best of similar assignments anywhere.

Back from the dead... I must say Izmir was THE BEST assignment I could ask for. I actually met the jlnoyes over in Izmir lol. The atmosphere of Izmir as a 1 year restricted remote was amazing. No curfew like Incirlik, and the place we "used" to work at 'Bayrakli Park' is now being downsized & everyone is moving into the Hilton in Alsancak. From personal experience, I LOVED it...so much so, that I extended there and even tied the knot there. Yep, got married and now I have an actual reason to go back whenever. I'm a 2T2 (Port Dawg) and we kinda worked way the f**k out there in Cigli on the TAF base, but it was totally worth it. I must say if anyone sees this and gets an assignment there, you will not be dissapointed! And travel on the ITT trips! Weekends are usually free for folks...especially COMM! BTW, I just left in Feb 2009 & already want to go back lol!!!

Wait...we are moving back to the Hilton? Talk about changes. My buddy worked at the Hilton when he was there. I worked out at the park when I was there in '07. Now it's back to the Hilton. I could have skipped riding the buses in the summer if we would have been at the Hilton.

Going back to the Hilton is good news. I got there back in 04 and we had just set up at the park a couple months prior to my arrival. The park sucked and I wish I had the opportunity to work in Alsancak. I would actually go back now.
