muscle milk is ok if theres nothing else on hand, i drink it before bed because its mostly cassien protein which is slower to break down. but you want 100% whey after a workout since it will recover your muscle quicker.

Eh, I'll get Whey when I run out of MM. Will the Muscle Milk suffice for now?

Question; where did you find the information that Muscle Milk is mostly Casein? I've searched for a bit and haven't found that information anywhere. The products website itself states it's a blend of ( this is the powder form ) Calcium & Sodium Caseinate, Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Peptides, Lactoferrin, L-Glutamine, and Taurine; not once does it list Caseinate Protiens.

Just so you are made aware, your body doesn't need just protien after a workout, it also needs carbs, vitamins, aminos, and other important building blocks.

I would suggest getting some of this ; http://controlledlabs.com/product_desc.php?id=117 from Controlled Labs.
It would take the place of your Muscle Milk, while providing you with a slew of other benifits.

( note, I am not a physical trainer or physician; simply giving my opinion based on information I have found, and what has worked for me in my experiences )

Well I got my stuff in the mail. Muscle Milk and TwinLab Creatine tabs. What is the best time to take this stuff? Is it any different than the recommended directions?

I dont know what the specifics on those say, but generally its best to take for first bit of creatine in the am on an empty stomach and again after the gym, and protein is best right after the gym

One last nub question, for now. Should I take that stuff on days I don't work out?

yup, believe it or not, you will be growing in the off time from the gym, it takes something around 3 days for a muscle to repair itself on average. lots of sleep helps too.

I hear a lot of stuff about needing an excess of protein to build muscle, but most of it is bullsh*t. Yes, you need more if you're planning on working out a lot or bulking up, but you don't need to take in a ton of the stuff. Recents tests are showing that any more than twice the daily recommended allowance of protein doesn't benefit you.

http://exercise.about.com/cs/nutrition/a/protein.htm

The math and links to the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) study is on the second page.

Personally, I avoid supplements altogether. The FDA doesn't monitor them under the same regulations as other foods and drugs, and supplement producers aren't even required to register their products with the FDA before selling them. They can put whatever they like in them as long as they have trace amounts of the ingredients listed on the bottle. Basically, that "muscle milk" you're using could just be mostly powdered sugar for all you know. Meh, too dodgy for me to invest in. I'll stick to eating a healthy diet and balancing my food groups based on my level of activity.

Yes it is true that the FDA doesn't regulate them, but if you still with reputible companies for the basics, Protein, you are good to go.

There was a big report a few years ago that said

"authors Dr. Portman and Dr. Ivy recommend .9 grams per pound of body weight to 1.2 grams per pound of bodyweight, and their recommendation was based on an analysis of current peer-reviewed, published research up to 2004."

I try to hit about .8 a day which is about 144 grams a day for me. Still hard as hell to hit. For skinny guys, this is the only way to build muscle. Nutrition is sooooo much more important than weight lifting when it comes to building muscle.

I won't buy much anymore that doesn't hide their ingrediants in some secret blend. You have no idea what you are ingesting. It could be 400 mg of caffeine for all you know.

You should try out http://www.nutraplanet.com/product/omeg ... vings.html Ultima. I actually have a bottle of it sitting at home when I get back from the deployment I'm on. I've used the BETA version of it before, and this is the final retail version.

It is caffeine free, and they say if you have a huge caffeine tolerance that you may want to mix it with a diet mt. dew or a half of a caffeine pill so you aren't suddenly dropping of a cliff.

I've been using it the last month or so and I love it. Actually worked out without the other day and I noticed a huge difference in my workout. I was dragging and was just missing the pump that Jack3d was giving me.

I usually take it about 15-30 minutes before working out. Max dose is 3 scoops. Tried 3 once and felt real jittery and spacy. I have no problems with taking 2 and have seen great gains and intensity during my workouts. The pump you get is awesome as well. I don't think I'll ever use NoXplode again.

I've never been real big on supplements. I have mostly just worked on trying to burn fat rather than bulk up, so I have onyl tried things like HydroxyCut and Xenadrine. Both of them never lasted long with me because they gave me a weird, fluttery feeling when my heart rate increased during workouts. It made me a little uneasy, especially because my mom and dad died from heart disease related symptoms (heart attacks before age 55).

Now, I just eat a very specialized diet, drink a lot of water and take a daily multi-vitamin along with doing at least 45-60 minutes of cardio 5 times a week (plus whatever we do at squadron PT). I have lost 15 pounds since early February, 4 inches from my waist and improved my 1 1/2 mile run-time by 3 minutes.
