atm it's got a 2 multiplier for first termers reenlisting. tbh I was kind of surprised we still had it this year. I have a feeling it will be gone next year. Thats just my feeling though I don't work in manning or have any inside info.
But really you shouldn't even be thinking about reenlisting yet...wait until you've actually enlisted and see if you even like it enough to stay in when that time comes. And the "big" enlistment bonus isn't even that big. When I re-up this year it will be 16k-ish before taxes. So what like...9-10k after taxes? Thats hardly what I would call big and wouldn't base my decision on the bonus alone. Especially considering there might not even be one 4-6 years from now.

FYI to figure the bonus amount from the multiplier you multiply your monthly base pay amount * the multiplier * the number of years you reenlist for. That gives you the total amount. You get 50% of that up front and the the other 50% in equal annual payments on your anniversary date for the rest of your enlistment. So with the current pay rate, a SrA reenlisting at 4 years for 4 years with a 2 SRB multiplier would get: $2199.90 * 2 * 4 = $17,599.20 You'd get $8,799.60 up front before taxes, then $2,933.20 before taxes each year on your anniversary date for the next 3 years.

Chances are there will not be a re-enlistment bonus next year...or maybe even later this year. There are too many 3Ds.
If you sign for 6, you get 2 stripes after basic.
As already mentioned, you need to think of something other than re-enlisting. You're not even in yet.

How in the 9 hells can you predict that there will even be and SRB in 4 to 6 years?

Don't even think about the reinlistment bonus yet. I had a multiplier of 6 for my zone B reinlistment and it went from a 6 to a 0 instantly. There is no possible way to predict what if any bonus you will have in 4 to 6 years.

Bonus in my field was a 0.5 when I came in, a 2 when my 4-year enlistee friends re-enlisted, a 6 when I re-enlisted and a 0 now. You can't predict what it will be in 6 months, much less 4-6 years, so don't even consider it when determining whether to come in for 4 or 6.

Reenlistment bonuses fluctuate all the time. Your recruiter could be right, but he/she could also be wrong.
It turned out that signing up for 4 years was good for me, because I barely made the cutoff for the highest reenlistment bonus multiplier SRB 6. so it came out to like $48k after taxes. If I would have signed up for 6 years instead of 4 my bonus would have been around $15k. (some people get $0 for reenlisting) It just depends how many people the air force needs for that career field when it comes time for you to reenlist.
So... I got lucky. If I were you, I would sign up for 4 anyways... you don't know if you will like it or not.... but that's just me

Tell the recruiter he/she has no business selling re-enlistment bonuses as an incentive. He/she should know better. It can't be predicted or controlled by anyone 4 years or 6 years in the future. They shouldn't be dangling anything like that kind of cash in front of you when they damn well know it will change. Tell him an ex-recruiter told you that. That ought to cause sonme fireworks, lol.

skipping ahead to E-3 isn't that big of a jump. You will likely be stuck at E-4 forever anyways.

Based on pay I would say that is still a 3 or 4k difference and possibly more in the long run. I dont think that is enough to justify signing up for 6 on that alone but it does give you a little more time to figure out if you want this to be a career.

Yup, but If I was going to make a career out of the military, I would go the Officer router, not enlisted.

Speaking of the re-enlistment bonus
I'm re-enlisting in Afghanistan in a couple of months, tax free and all.
When you re-enlist over there do you get the whole bonus up front tax free or do you still get half tax free?
IF it's still the half do you get the rest tax free in the installments or do they tax those?
Just curious, my enlistment brief isn't until this week so I figured i'd ask here out of curiousity

So if you reenlist in a tax free zone, all payments are tax free. If you reenlist in a taxed zone, all payments are taxes (no matter if you are in a tax free zone during a payment). This is because essentially the Air Force is "holding" the money for you, but the payment is already made, so the taxes have been assessed already.
Hope it helps -- Josh

That is just my opinion and I am not in it for the money as the military is not the place to go for that. Though my only complaint about pay is from BAH not being high enough for where I am at.

Next phase criteria should be announced around the end of May for a 30 Aug bye-bye date. Two more phases next year are planned as well. I wouldn't be surprised if profiles, PT failures and a reduction in E-5 HYT comes down in the end.

Quote: So whats the final word. Do we get our anniversary payment this year still or no? Why wouldnt you? Are you asking because of force shaping? Like I said in my previous post, when they pay your initial bonus they commit the money for your yearly payments, so unless they were gonna cancel bonuses en masse, they would have some big problems accounting wise. So I guess in short, yes they will be paying you. Those bonuses are paid on what the recruiting/retention needs were at the time your initial payment was made, not now.

I like knowing that if I suck badly enough at the tests I can still at least retire if nothing else.
